Title Pre-pasted flash-free orthodontic brackets reduce bonding time and the need to remove excess adhesive compared to conventional orthodontic brackets and bonding techniques.
Clinical Question Do pre-pasted flash-free adhesive orthodontic brackets reduce bonding time and the need to remove excess adhesive compared to conventional brackets in orthodontic patients?
Clinical Bottom Line Pre-pasted flash-free orthodontic brackets reduce bonding time and the need to remove excess adhesive compared to conventional orthodontic brackets and bonding techniques.

#1) 26258897Foersch/2016Extracted Human TeethComparative
Key resultsEighty extracted human teeth were divided evenly into two groups in a simulated clinical setting. They were then bonded by a specialized orthodontist under standard conditions (Group A – APC Flash-free adhesive; Group B – APC Plus adhesive). (Group A) bond time was 14.3 s/tooth faster (Group B). Excess adhesive ranged from 81.66 –166.27 micrometers for Group A and 690.8 - 988.53 micrometers for Group B.. The Adhesive Remnant Index ARI score was not statistically different, with Group A scoring 2.0 and Group B 2.8.
#2) 25970652Lee/2016Extracted Human TeethComparative
Key resultsThirty-six extracted maxillary premolars were randomly divided into three groups. Group 1 (APC Flash Free Adhesive), Group 2 (Clarity Advanced Ceramic pasted manually), and Group 3 (APC Plus pre-pasted; control). Bonding time was measured with a stop watch, bond strength with an instron machine, and excess adhesive with the adhesive remnant index (ARI). The ARI was significantly higher for Group 1 when compared to Group 2 and Group 3.

The Evidence
Validity: The same protocol and clinical scenario were utilized for test and control groups, under one calibrated orthodontist. Due to the nature of the study it was not possible to blind protocol conditions. There is no evidence of bias or competing interest. Perspective: Bonding time can be reduced by flash free adhesive systems. It is important to consider that studies show that the flash free systems ensures minimal flash without the need to take additional time for excess adhesive removal.
Applicability Pre-pasted flash free orthodontic brackets can improve clinical efficiency by reducing bonding appointment times. Additionally, patients benefit from a cleaner tooth to bracket interface and decreased plaque accumulation due to less excess adhesive. Additional study is needed to evaluate consistency regarding plaque accumulation scores with the use of flash-free systems.
