Title |
Reduction of Crestal Bone Loss With Placement of Platform Switching Implant |
Clinical Question |
What is the effect of platform switching vs. platform matching implants in regard to crestal bone loss? |
Clinical Bottom Line |
The use of platform switching implants has been shown to minimize crestal bone loss when compared to platform matching implants. |

Meta-analysis, based on the full 25 study groups, showed a significant bone loss for the control group compared with the platform switching group.(MD −0.41 mm (95% CI −0.52 to −0.29, P < 0.00001)) | 24819807 | Herekar/2014 | 15 studies (10 RCTs and 5 CCTs) with total of 1683 implants. | Study Type Systematic review and Meta-analysis | Key results | Marginal bone loss around platform-switched implants was significantly less than platform-matched implants [MD]: -0.34; 95% confidence interval [CI]: -0.37 to -0.30; P < 0.00001)” | 26847169 | Rocha/2016 | 63 patients with total of 135 implants. | Randomized Controlled Trial | Key results | From surgery to 36 months, the mean bone loss was 0.28 ± 0.56 mm for the platform-switching group and 0.68 ± 0.64 mm for the platform-matching group. | |

Comments on
The Evidence |
Validity: The best evidence on the platform switching implant included meta-analysis, systematic review, and RCTs. The validity of each study included in the meta-analysis and systematic review was assessed using the Jadad scale. They were classified on a scale of 0–5, with a score above 3 indicating an appropriate study. |
Applicability |
Platform switching dental implant use is applicable for general, prosthodontic, periodontic dentists and oral surgeons. The evidence has shown its effectiveness in minimizing crestal bone loss. |
