The Evidence
The Meta-analysis was unable to identify any randomized controlled trials on the effects of antibacterial agents incorporated into composite restorations for the prevention of dental caries. The in situ study was done one year after the systematic review and is highest level of study we could find to date. There is a need for more High level clinical trials to be conducted.
Applicability Based on the evidence currently available the use of antibacterial composite resins does not provide indication that they are superior to existing composite resins. However, the idea of incorporating antibacterial agents should not be disregarded at this time so that further study the potential effects and benefits can be better understood of antibacterial composites.
