Title All-Ceramic crowns Can Serve as Removable Partial Denture Abutments in Certain Clinical Situations
Clinical Question In patients requiring survey crowns as removable partial denture abutments, is an all-ceramic crown as clinically acceptable as a cast metal or porcelain fused to metal crown?
Clinical Bottom Line For patients desiring all-ceramic crowns as removable partial denture abutments, authors have shown the capability to make them viable replacements for cast crowns or porcelain fused to metal crowns. All-ceramic material properties that provide indication for use include mechanical strength in stress-bearing areas, resistance to corrosion, and low electrical conductivity. Even though fabrication of an all-ceramic survey crown has been shown to be a functional option, published evidence regarding its durability, longevity, or performance relative to other materials is lacking.

#1) 16594359Carracho/20071Tutorial
Key resultsSuccessful fabrication of an all-ceramic crown using the Procera system incorporated with computer-assisted design/computer-assisted machining (CAD/CAM) software was achieved. This article demonstrates successful placement of guide planes and occlusal rest seats on all-ceramic crowns on the maxillary right premolars, as well as guide planes and a cingulum rest seat on an all-ceramic crown on the maxillary left canine.
#2) 11044845Kancyper/20001Tutorial
Key resultsThis is a guideline of all-ceramic crown fabrication using the Procera AllCeram System (Nobel Biocare), incorporated with CAD/CAM technology, for removable partial denture abutment rest seats and guide planes in densely sintered aluminum oxide copings with porcelain veneering. This article demonstrates successful placement of a guide plane and occlusal rest seat on an all-ceramic crown on the mandibular right first premolar, as well as a guide plane and cingulum rest seat on an all-ceramic crown on the mandibular left canine.

The Evidence
Validity: This is a preliminary level of evidence that does not even qualify as a case report. No case reports or higher level of evidence could be found in a literature research. This search consisted of PubMed, Trip database, and Google, but did not locate any articles to serve as strong evidence. Perspective: Practitioners interested in this method should be on the lookout for future publications that compare the durability, longevity, or performance of all-ceramic crowns relative to other materials in similar situations.
Applicability The compiled information is applicable to patients seeking all-ceramic removable partial denture abutments as opposed to cast metal or porcelain fused to metal abutment crowns. Patients with issues related to the esthetics, biocompatibility, or the increasing expense of cast metal or porcelain fused to metal abutment crowns may find all-ceramic abutment crowns to be a viable option.
