| Title |
Survival Rate of Metal-Ceramic Crowns as Opposed to a Zirconia-Ceramic Crown |
| Clinical Question |
For a patient seeking a crown, would a zirconia-ceramic based crown or a metal-ceramic based crown have a higher survival rate? |
| Clinical Bottom Line |
Although there is no statistical difference in survival rates between zirconia-ceramic based crowns and metal-ceramic crowns, the zirconia-ceramic crowns are more likely to have minor fractures on the veneering surface than metal-ceramic crowns. |

| #1) 22339945 | Vigolo/2012 | 60 patients needing fixed dental prostheses | RCT | | Key results | Of the 60 patients that participated in this study, the survival rate for those that received metal-ceramic crowns was 95%. Those that received a Procera crown had a survival rate of 79% and those that received the Lava crowns had a survival rate of 85%. The study was conducted over a period of 5 years. No statistical difference was observed between a metal-ceramic crown and a zirconia-ceramic crown. However, Procera did show a statistical difference in the frequency of failures when compared to the control group. | |

Comments on
The Evidence |
This was a double-blinded RCT with more than an 80% completion rate. The groups were treated the same and received adequate follow-up. Recall bias is unlikely with little completing interests. The survival rate was judge based upon coping fracture, veneering fracture, occlusal wear, marginal adaptation, and anatomical form. |
| Applicability |
This study is highly applicable for a patient considering a single-unit FPD. |
