Title In Adult Patients, Diabetes Mellitus Type II may be an Influence in the Success of Root Canal Treated Teeth
Clinical Question In adult patients, does the presence of Diabetes Mellitus type II affect the success of root canal therapy compared to patients without that disease?
Clinical Bottom Line A RCT stated the tooth extraction after completions of NSRCT (non-surgical root canal treatment) is highly associated in patients with DM.

Key resultsDiabetes Mellitus is significantly associated with tooth extraction after completion of Nonsurgical Root Canal Treatment (NSRCT). The Confidence Interval was 95% and a P value of .0008.

The Evidence
Wang and his colleagues’ study design was a Randomized Control Trial. The groups in the study were similar at start, there was more than an 80% completion rate and the groups were treated the same. There was adequate follow up. It was not evident if the study was double blind. Compliance was adequate and recall bias unlikely. There were no competing interests. Further research should be done to confirm the results. With additional research, conclusions could then be made in regards to the effect of having glycemic control in the success of root canal therapy in diabetic patients.
Applicability The subjects are representative of patients, therefore the information may be generalizable. Root Canal therapy in patients with diabetes mellitus type II would be feasible in a clinical setting. A patient could potentially experience a successful root canal therapy, as a benefit. On the other hand, the patient may experience the failure of the root canal treated teeth.
