Title Limited Evidence Suggests An Association Of Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes With Mothers Who Have Periodontal Disease
Clinical Question What is the likelihood of pre-term birth with mothers who have periodontal disease?
Clinical Bottom Line Mothers with periodontal disease are shown to have an increased risk ratio for pre-term delivery and low birth weight babies. However, caution must be used when reporting this association because it is based on prospective cohort studies, which cannot verify cause and effect of completely rule out confounding effects. Key resultsThe risk ratio of pre-term birth for pregnant mothers with periodontal disease was 1.70 with a 95% confidence interval of 1.03-2.81. The risk ratio of low birth weight babies was 2.11 with a 95% confidence interval of 1.05-4.23. The risk ratio of PD/LBW was 3.57 with a 95% confidence interval of 1.87-6.84.

The Evidence
A meta-analysis of 11 prospective cohort studies supports this evidence. 12,173 patients were included in these studies. A comprehensive, detailed search for relevant trials was performed. These studies were assessed individually for validity. Further research is needed to verify the validity of this association because these studies are all progressive cohort studies, which cannot verify cause and effect as well as completely control for confounding factors.
Applicability Applicable to pregnant mothers with a history of periodontitis. The research subjects were from several different countries.
