Title Similar Longevity Of Gold Inlays Compared To CAD/CAM Ceramic Inlays
Clinical Question Which material provides the best longevity in patients requiring a MOD inlay dental restoration: gold or CAD/CAM ceramic?
Clinical Bottom Line All the inlays had similar failure free years. Laboratory-fabricated ceramic inlays had the highest costs and, thus, were less cost-effective than chair-side CAD/CAM ceramic and gold inlay. (See Comments on the CAT below)

Key resultsOver a 9-year observation period, the number of undiscounted failure-free years for laboratory ceramic inlays was 8.62 (95 percent confidence interval, 8.40–8.85), for CAD/CAM ceramic inlays it was 8.65 (8.58–8.73), and for Gold inlays it was 8.76 (8.72–8.80)

The Evidence
This was a meta-analysis. The systematic literature search did not find any trial that compared the longevity of laboratory-fabricated ceramic, chair-side CAD/CAM ceramic, and gold inlays. The 10 studies that met the minimum criteria were case series
Applicability The evidence is directly applicable to a typical patient in any dental practice requiring a MOD inlay dental restoration.

A Pubmed search was performed on longevity of CAD/CAM ceramic inlay versus gold inlay. A more recent study was found: PMID: 18426165. The results showed some improvement in CAD/CAM ceramic inlays but had not surpassed that of gold inlays.
