Brandt and colleagues analyzed a set of randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews, with a total of 269 patients, comparing anesthetic length of both articaine 4% 1:100,000 epi and lidocaine 2% 1:100,000 epi. Lidocaine was used as the gold standard. Compilation of the article titles was done electronically, which resulted in elimination of any source of bias. The qualities of all trials chosen were evaluated by considering randomization, and both description and number of patient losses. No competing interests were found.
Applicability Due to articaine‘s extensive availability and its similar price to lidocaine, it presents itself as a practical option for routine dental practices. However, its effect on inflamed teeth has not been proven.
