#1) 22353460Taschner/201268 patients between 4 and 7 years old with Quigley Hein plaque index of more than 1.8Single-masked, randomized, split mouth clinical trial.
Key resultsOverall Quigley Hein plaque index scores for Sonicare for kids (SFK) electric toothbrush A and B were .36 while the manual toothbrush scored .5. The values indicate that, in one minute, the SFK A and B toothbrushes were able to clean nearly 42% of the tooth surfaces (67% at two minutes) while the manual toothbrush cleaned about 25% of tooth surfaces (41% at two minutes). SFK had an overall 65% plaque reduction compared to the manual toothbrush’s overall plaque reduction of 49%.

The Evidence
Validity: This was a randomized, single-blinded, split-mouth study with 1 and 2 minute quadrant professionally applied brushings. Disclosing solution was used at baseline to prevent baseline scoring errors. The study was supported by Philips Oral Healthcare.
Applicability This information can benefit a dentist who wants to provide more information to parents about better dental homecare for their children. Children do not have the same dexterity as adults and can use assistance from a sonic toothbrush in order to properly remove plaque.
